Making Good on New Year’s Resolutions

My New Year Resolutions this year (again) were to get physically active for a change and to quit smoking – for probably the tenth year in a row, at least. Well, this morning I took the first step in making good on those promises I’ve made to myself so many times over the years…

I went to a gym.

AND, I actually touched and used some of the equipment!

AND I didn’t die! YAY ME!

Yes folks, I just went to a gym and actually exercised with purpose for the first time in my entire life. At 41 years old.

I joined the gym – and not just for the free babysitting, I swear!

Seriously – this looks like a really great place. No snobby or obsessive people, unlimited free tanning, free consult with a Personal Trainer, and yes, free daycare while you work out.

I was smart though – it was Kyle’s first time in a group daycare setting, and my first workout, so I didn’t want to over-do it for either of us. 30 minutes on a treadmill with an incline and fast enough to get my heart rate up to 120. I felt a little rubber-legged afterwards, but otherwise it felt really good to work up a light sweat and get my heart and lungs working! (The cheap high from all the extra oxygen after being a smoker for so long didn’t hurt either! 😉 )

I’m going to go once a week for 30 minutes to start with, then I’ll go a little more for a little longer, and we’ll see how it goes. Kyle was apparently throwing toys at other kids, so we have to be careful not to wear out our welcome and I’m going to call and see which days are slower in the daycare area (there were a ton of kids in there today).

They say it takes 3 weeks to form a new habit, regardless of whether it’s a good or bad one. I’m going to work on quitting smoking once I get in the habit of going to the gym. One step at a time here people…wish me luck!
